Indications
Meropenem is indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Infections it can treat include:
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia
- Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
- Sepsis and bacterial meningitis
- Complicated urinary tract infections
This antibiotic is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain anaerobic organisms. It is especially useful in immunocompromised patients or those requiring empirical treatment in hospital settings.
Composition
Each vial of Meropenem contains 1 g of meropenem as the active ingredient, in addition to excipients that facilitate its formulation and stability.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to meropenem, other carbapenems, or any of the excipients in the formulation. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics.
Precautions
It is recommended to evaluate the patient's renal function before starting treatment, as well as during treatment, as meropenem is primarily excreted renally. In patients with renal insufficiency, dosage adjustment may be necessary. Likewise, caution should be exercised in patients with a history of seizures, as an increased incidence of seizures has been reported in some cases treated with antibiotics of the same class.
Storage
Store the vial at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
