Indications

Memantine 20 mg is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. This medication acts as a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, which helps regulate the activity of glutamate, a neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory. Memantine administration has been shown to improve cognitive functions and quality of life in patients with Alzheimer's-type dementia. In addition, it can be used in some cases of vascular dementia and other types of cognitive impairment. It is important to note that Memantine does not stop the progression of the disease but can help manage symptoms and improve behavior in treated patients.

Composition

Each Memantine 20 mg tablet contains 20 mg of Memantine (as hydrochloride) and excipients necessary for the formulation.

Contraindications

Memantine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Memantine or any of the excipients in the formulation. Furthermore, its use is not recommended in patients with severe renal impairment, i.e., those with a creatinine clearance of less than 30 ml/min. Caution should also be exercised in patients with a history of seizures or conditions that predispose to seizures, as Memantine may increase the risk of seizures.

Precautions

Special care should be taken when administering Memantine to patients with a history of cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, or those receiving other medications that affect blood pressure. In addition, it is recommended to monitor renal function before and during treatment, as Memantine is primarily eliminated renally. Concomitant use with other central nervous system-acting medications should be carefully evaluated.

Storage

Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 °C, in a dry place away from sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
