Indications
Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg is used as an emergency contraceptive method. It is indicated to prevent unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive method failure. Its effectiveness is greater when administered within 72 hours after intercourse. It can also be used in cases of rape or sexual abuse, and it is important that the patient receives immediate medical attention after the incident.
This medication primarily works by delaying or inhibiting ovulation. It can alter sperm transport or egg fertilization. It does not interfere with an already established pregnancy and is not effective if implantation of the fertilized egg has already occurred.
Composition
Each tablet contains 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel as an active ingredient. Excipients include lactose monohydrate, corn starch, talc, and magnesium stearate, among others.
Contraindications
Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to levonorgestrel or any of the excipients in the formulation. It should not be used in women who are pregnant or suspect they may be pregnant, as it is not an abortifacient method.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in women with a history of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or cardiovascular disease. It is advisable for patients to consult their doctor before using this medication, especially if they have pre-existing medical conditions. Its use as a regular contraceptive method is not recommended.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, in a dry place and out of reach of children. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
