Indications
Gentamicin is indicated in the treatment of severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, intra-abdominal infections, sepsis, and endocarditis, as well as skin and soft tissue infections. Its use is particularly relevant in patients with infections by gram-negative bacteria, including strains resistant to other antibiotics. Furthermore, it may be indicated in the management of infections by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as in the treatment of infections in immunocompromised patients.
Composition
Each ampoule of Gentamicin contains 80 mg of Gentamicin (as gentamicin sulfate) in 2 mL of sterile solution. Other components may include excipients such as water for injection.
Contraindications
Gentamicin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to gentamicin or other aminoglycosides. Its use is also contraindicated in patients with significant renal damage or neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, as it may worsen muscle weakness.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when administering Gentamicin to patients with compromised renal function, as it may increase the risk of toxicity. Monitoring of serum drug levels is recommended in these cases. The use of this medication should also be considered in elderly patients or those receiving other ototoxic or nephrotoxic medications. It is important to perform renal function tests before and during treatment.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 °C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the package.
