Indications
Gentamicin is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group, used in the treatment of serious bacterial infections. It is especially effective against gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria. It is indicated in cases of:
- Complicated urinary tract infections.
- Respiratory infections, including pneumonia and bacterial bronchitis.
- Sepsis and septicemia.
- Skin and soft tissue infections.
- Intra-abdominal infections.
- Bone and joint infections.
- Prophylaxis in surgical procedures in patients with a high risk of infection.
Composition
Each ampoule contains:
- Gentamicin (as sulfate) 160 mg
- Excipients: water for injection, among others.
Contraindications
The use of gentamicin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to gentamicin or other aminoglycosides. It should also be avoided in patients with severe kidney conditions, as it may worsen kidney toxicity.
Precautions
Special care should be taken in patients with compromised kidney function, as gentamicin is mainly excreted renally. It is important to monitor serum levels of the medication to avoid toxicity. Concomitant use with other nephrotoxic drugs or drugs that may affect hearing should be avoided.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 30 °C. Keep out of reach of children.
