Indications
Phenytoin is indicated for the treatment of partial and generalized seizures, as well as for the control of tonic-clonic seizures and the prophylaxis of postoperative convulsions. This medication is frequently used in focal and generalized epilepsy. In addition, it can be used in the management of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly in the treatment of ventricular tachycardias, and in some conditions related to the neuromuscular system, depending on the corresponding medical evaluation.
Composition
Each tablet contains 100 mg of phenytoin sodium as an active ingredient. Excipients: starch, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and talc.
Contraindications
Phenytoin is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to phenytoin or any component of the formula. Its use is not recommended in patients with atrioventricular block, acute intermittent porphyria, or in those with a history of severe skin reactions to medications. It should also be avoided in pregnant women, unless the benefits outweigh the risks, and always under strict medical supervision.
Precautions
Special care should be taken in patients with a history of liver disease, heart problems, diabetes, or in those taking other medications that may interact with phenytoin. Constant monitoring of plasma drug levels and dose adjustments as needed are important. Abrupt discontinuation of treatment can lead to an increase in seizure frequency.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 °C, in a dry place and away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
