Indications

Colistimethate USP 150 mg is indicated for the treatment of severe infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, including those resistant to other antibiotics. It is particularly effective in respiratory tract infections, complicated urinary tract infections, and septicemia. It is also used in the treatment of infections by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, as well as in patients with cystic fibrosis who present with lung infections. The use of this medication should be based on the susceptibility of the involved pathogen and local treatment guidelines.

Composition

Each vial of Colistimethate USP contains 150 mg of colistimethate sodium as the active ingredient. Additionally, it may contain excipients that facilitate its formulation and stability.

Contraindications

Colistimethate USP is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to colistin or any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use should also be avoided in patients with severe kidney disease, unless a careful risk-benefit assessment is performed.

Precautions

Caution is advised in patients with impaired renal function, as colistin can accumulate and cause toxicity. It is important to monitor renal function during treatment. Furthermore, the use of this medication should be considered in patients with neuromuscular disorders, as it may increase the risk of muscle weakness.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the packaging.
