Indications
Chlorthalidone is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension in adults. This medication acts as a diuretic that helps reduce blood pressure by eliminating excess fluid and salt from the body. It is also used in the management of heart failure, edema associated with conditions such as liver cirrhosis and nephrotic syndrome, and in some cases, to prevent the formation of kidney stones in patients with hyperuricosuria. Chlorthalidone can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with other antihypertensives.
Composition
Each tablet contains: Chlorthalidone 50 mg. Excipients: starch, lactose, magnesium stearate, among others.
Contraindications
Chlorthalidone is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to chlorthalidone or any component of the formula. It should not be administered in cases of anuria or in patients with severe renal insufficiency. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe liver disease. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of gout, diabetes mellitus, and electrolyte imbalance.
Precautions
Monitoring of electrolyte levels, especially potassium and sodium, is recommended in patients using chlorthalidone. Likewise, caution should be exercised in elderly patients, those with a history of allergies, and those who are receiving treatment with other medications that may affect fluid and electrolyte balance. Regular clinical follow-up is important to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment and the appearance of adverse effects.
