Indications
Cephalexin is an antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin group, indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is commonly used in the management of:
- Upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis and pneumonia.
- Skin and soft tissue infections, such as abscesses and cellulitis.
- Urinary tract infections, such as cystitis and pyelonephritis.
- Acute otitis media.
It is important to note that cephalexin should only be used for infections caused by susceptible bacteria, and an appropriate culture should be performed to confirm the therapeutic indication.
Composition
Each Cephalexin 500 mg tablet contains:
- Cephalexin (as cephalexin monohydrate) 500 mg.
- Excipients: starch, magnesium stearate, talc, among others.
Contraindications
Cephalexin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or any component of the formula. Caution should also be exercised in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillins, due to possible cross-reactivity.
Precautions
It should be used with caution in patients with renal insufficiency, as drug elimination may be affected. Dosage adjustment is recommended in these cases. In addition, patients should be monitored for the possible appearance of adverse reactions, including diarrhea, which may indicate antibiotic-associated colitis.

Store in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
