Indications

Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) is indicated in the treatment of various conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria. Its mechanism of action is based on interference with the autoimmunity process and modification of the inflammatory response, making it a valuable therapeutic option in autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine has also been studied in the context of treating viral diseases, although its use in these indications should be evaluated by a specialist physician.

Composition

Each Plaquenil tablet contains 200 mg of hydroxychloroquine.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to hydroxychloroquine or any component of the formulation. It is also contraindicated in patients with pre-existing retinal problems or visual disturbances, as well as in those with severe hematological diseases, such as erythropoietic porphyria.

Precautions

Caution is recommended in patients with cardiovascular, hepatic, or renal diseases. Regular ophthalmological monitoring is important, as prolonged use of hydroxychloroquine can be associated with ocular toxicity. Additionally, care should be taken in patients who are taking other medications that may affect the heart or liver function.

Storage

Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, in a dry place protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
