Indications
Daraprim (Pyrimethamine) is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by protozoa, especially in the treatment of toxoplasmosis, an infection that can be severe in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV/AIDS. It is also used for the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria in combination with sulfonamides. This medication works by inhibiting folic acid synthesis in protozoa, which affects their growth and reproduction.
Composition
Each Daraprim tablet contains 25 mg of Pyrimethamine as the active ingredient. Additionally, it contains excipients that facilitate the formulation and administration of the medication.
Contraindications
Daraprim is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Pyrimethamine or any of the formula's components. Its use is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, unless strictly necessary and under medical supervision. It should also be avoided in patients with megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of liver or kidney disease, as well as in those with conditions that may predispose to folate toxicity. Regular monitoring of hemoglobin and leukocyte levels is important during treatment. Daraprim should be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
